Sport Relief Goes Global!

2006 saw thousands of young people from Africa and India sign up to complete the Sport Relief Mile for the first time.
The Mile has traditionally been run in the UK, but a partnership with the British Council and Youth Sport Trust's Dreams +Teams programme saw Sport Relief go global.
Sainsbury's Sport Relief Miles were run in Cameroon, Egypt, India, Nigeria, Ethiopia and South Africa.

Cameroon

Hundreds of young people got in the spirit by taking part in Sport Relief games and events. Among the most spectacular was a dodge-ball game for blind athletes, while deaf and mute children joined in football matches.
The money raised is being given to a social centre that uses a foster family approach to care for and reintegrate Cameroon's orphaned and disadvantaged children.

Egypt

500 participants aged between 5 and 90 years-old sprinted, walked and meandered for Sport Relief. Activities included a painting competition for local artists, and the winners handed out the 'Done It' socks to those who completed their Mile.
£1,000 was raised and is being given to local groups that work with orphans and cancer patients.

India

Sport Relief landed in New Delhi, where about 600 children from local schools took part in a wide range of games and activities.
These included hoop throwing, three-legged races, hockey and traditional Indian games.
Money raised was donated to Sport Relief.

Nigeria

Nigerian Sport Relief took place in Lagos and well over 1,000 young people turned up to sing and dance their Mile. This created more of a carnival than a run, with people using the Sport Relief socks as headgear!
The Nigerian event raised awareness of Sport Relief and the issues surrounding child abuse and child poverty.

Ethiopia & Africa

A Sport Relief walk took pace in the centre of the capital city, Addis Ababa, with 2,000 young students and their teachers taking part. While in South Africa several Dreams +Teams schools completed their Miles.
